Aboriginal Health Consultant

First Nations Identified Role

This role will focus on developing and implementing strategies that empower mainstream providers to deliver culturally sensitive services. The role will work closely with COORDINARE staff, local health providers, and the local community to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community engagement in the PHN's initiatives. 

By leveraging cultural standing in community and strong ties to community, this role will act as a conduit between local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the PHN, and health service providers. The role will drive the development and implementation of programs and initiatives designed to improve the health, social, and emotional well-being outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations within the South Eastern NSW catchment. 

An integral function of this position will be to provide an advisory role to COORDINARE on Aboriginal cultural matters. This will include supporting the cultural competency training of COORDINARE staff as well as taking a lead on the ongoing development and implementation of COORDINARE's Reconciliation Action Plan.

Skills and Experience

The successful candidate should identify as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and should have:

• experience working in Aboriginal affairs and/or in a health / primary care setting, 
• demonstrated understanding of the concept of Aboriginal health and effective approaches to improvement,
• demonstrated experience translating cultural knowledge and understanding into high level but practical advice,
• demonstrated ability to network, liaise and/or facilitate collaborative partnerships with Aboriginal communities and other key stakeholders,
• demonstrated ties to local Aboriginal community,
• excellent communication skills with a strong capacity to remain impartial and unbiased,
• familiarity and competency in the use of computer software to manage projects and prepare reports and presentations.
