What our Panel said about alcohol... April 2017

This month, our Consumer Health Panel was invited to provide feedback on their alcohol-related behaviour and experiences which will be used to inform our upcoming work in the drug and alcohol sector.

Responses showed that 30% of the panel rarely consumed alcohol (less than monthly), if at all. However, 45% of the panel said they drank alcohol ‘once or twice a week’ (25%) or ‘most days’ (20%). Importantly, 95% of respondents said they were aware of the recommendations/guidelines about levels of safe alcohol consumption.

Almost 70% of respondents said they had been concerned about their own drinking behaviours/habits or those of someone they care about.

Their main concerns were focused on health of the individual (71%) and the impact the behaviour was having on family/friends. The majority of people did seek help or advice from a GP (67%), family/friends (22%) and a counsellor (11%).

COORDINARE, as the South Eastern NSW PHN, will soon commission a number of new drug and alcohol treatment initiatives from May 2017.  Announcements are due to be made shortly.
