New hope for 500 South Eastern NSW residents with arthritis pain
18 June 2025
Five hundred people living in South Eastern NSW experiencing pain from arthritis have been given fresh hope thanks to COORDINARE - South Eastern NSW PHN - and The Arthritis Movement (TAM).
TAM has developed a free Pain Pack that targets osteoarthritis pain using non-pharmacological options, and last year, COORDINARE sponsored 500 packs to be given to residents in South Eastern NSW, with the last of the packs delivered in early June 2025. COORDINARE has also proudly supported the development of CLARA app an innovative AI-powered app developed by TAM to help individuals manage their arthritis more effectively.
The Pack contains strategies such as anti-inflammatory diet, exercise, weight management, mindfulness, assistive aids and thermotherapy. It also contains tools such as a heat pack, topical heat cream samples, herb seeds, resistance bands and a squeeze ball.
Local resident, Anne was happy to trial the Pain Pack trial as she had recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in her neck. “The Pack included information on a TENS machine, which uses a mild electric current to relieve pain,” said Anne. “I’d never heard of it, so I tried one and now I use it all the time, particularly when my husband and I go on road trips."
TAM CEO Alex Green said that many residents had adopted the items and strategies, with 78% of those who returned feedback surveys reporting that they used them at least three times a week.
“We talk to people in pain every day. Many take medication because they aren’t aware of the non-pharmacological options or haven’t considered them,” Alex said. “The Packs motivate people to try something besides medication to relieve their pain and encourage them to believe that their pain could be changed.
“Most users tell us the Pack has inspired them to take more interest in their health, ask more questions and seek solutions such as physiotherapy and occupational therapy.”
“The feedback from users is invaluable and we are grateful for COORDINARE’s support,” Alex said.
COORDINARE’s CEO Prudence Buist said: “We are delighted that the pain pack initiative is delivering positive outcomes and experiences for people living with chronic pain in our region. COORDINARE is committed to funding several initiatives to improve health outcomes for people experiencing chronic pain.”
TAM aims to put 10,000 packs a year into the NSW and Queensland communities. If you are struggling with arthritis pain, you can find trusted advice and research at: askclara.com.au.
